Florida Snakes

The reason as to why these snakes have been nicknamed as “Florida Snakes” is because these are found only in Florida and nowhere else in the world. There are two species of the Florida snake and both are very tiny and cute. Their average size of these would be around 7 inches to 10 inches and this comes about 20 or 24 cms.

This would be even smaller than the conventional scale that most of the students use while studying and drawing. These snakes usually have a black head but the rest of their body would be off-white or sometimes even dull white in color.

These snakes are most often encountered in central Florida and sometimes even in South Eastern Florida. These are usually found under those small sand hills and under rocks. These are completely harmless snakes not just because they are venomous but because they only feed on small insects and cockroaches. Their diet sometimes would also include snails and other beetles that usually wander around, sometimes in and outside our houses.

As said above there are two species of these Florida snakes that are found, they are the “Florida Green Water Snake” and the “Glossy Crayfish Snake”.

The Florida Green Snake are usually thick bodied snake and their color could vary from brown to sometimes green and orange. However most of these snakes are usually green in color but very rarely you could come across even an orange or a brown snake of this specie.

A normal Florida Green Snake could measure around 30-50 inches in length could be as thick as a pencil in width. These are usually found in marshes and shallow lakes and rivers that flow across the mountain and valleys. They usually prefer small fishes, tadpoles and frogs that are small in size.

The Glossy Crayfish is species within the same class and kind. These are usually found in the northern part of Florida. These are usually shy creatures and prefer to stay away from humans and don’t even attack when confronted upon.

This is supposed to be the main reason why they are seen very rarely. But still if lucky, one can find them in small lakes and ponds that run across the woods. These usually feed and prey upon fishes, tadpoles and frogs, almost the same as their cousins.
